The Buffalo Bills have released a statement saying that defensive back Damar Hamlin is in critical condition, but has shown significant improvement in the past 24 hours.
Doctors from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center gave an update on the condition of Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin.
In a press conference on Thursday, Dr. Timothy Pritts said that Hamlin had begun to regain consciousness, which is a significant turning point in his recovery.
The doctors also said that Hamlin has been able to move his hands and feet and is communicating in writing.
These are all positive signs for Hamlin’s recovery and suggest that he is making progress towards a full recovery.
It has been reported by Sal Capaccio of WGR 550 that the doctors stated, “It’s not just that the lights are on. He’s home. It appears all the cylinders are firing in his brain.”
The doctors also mentioned that they do not have immediate answers for the cause of Hamlin’s cardiac arrest and it is too early to discuss the possibility of him returning to play football again, as reported by Buscaglia.
The doctors praised the swift actions of the Bills’ medical staff following Hamlin’s collapse during the first quarter of Monday night’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, which resulted in the suspension of the game.
The doctors stated, “The Bills’ training staff who was with him immediately recognized this was not a run-of-the-mill injury and that they had a significant event on their hands. This went as well as something like this could go under those circumstances.”
Hamlin suffered the injury while attempting to tackle Bengals receiver Tee Higgins, and his heartbeat was restored on the field before he was transported to the hospital via ambulance.
Hamlin joined the Bills as a sixth-round draft pick in 2021 after completing a five-year college career at Pittsburgh.
